Young people looking for a positive adult role model they can build a trusting friendship with are matched with a trained volunteer mentor based on personality, shared interests, location and other factors that will help the match be successful.
please note criteria may differ slightly between regions
This age range may vary slightly across our regions. Mentoring Coordinators will continue to support the match up until the young person turns 18.
It is important that the young person wants to have a mentor and although potentially a little nervous, is looking forward to having someone spend time with them.
This is where the magic happens. Consistent contact is a proven factor in helping to ignite youth potential.
We are aware that there are many kiwi kids who fly under the radar for all sorts of reasons and because of that, they are missing out.
Parents and Caregivers must ensure that they and their young person will be available for regular contact with the Mentor and BBBS Staff. Referrals are made by Parents and Caregivers and occasionally with the support of a third party.
Our Mentors are volunteers. Young people with significant and complex behavioural or health concerns may not be suitable for our programme.
